The Vintage

Growing conditions in 2003 began with a cool, wet spring that delayed bud break. However, the bright sunshine in late spring and early summer, allowed the vines to begin very positive development. The grape flavors increased slowly during the cooler than normal summer months and a heat spike in mid-September elevated the sugars and flavors to ripeness.

Winemaking

The Cabernet Sauvignon fruit in this blend was harvested by hand in small lots from October 10th through the first of November. The grapes were fermented at an average of 86°F with systematic pump-overs for excellent flavor and color extraction. The wine was aged in a combination of American and French oak barrels for 20 months. Merlot was added to the final blend to increase texture and softness on the mid-palate. The Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot enhance the aromas and add notes of spice to the wine.

Tasting Notes

This Cabernet is an alluring blend with perfect balance between ripe fruit and restrained structure. It has attractive aromas of plum, currant, toasty oak and earth tones. This plush wine is loaded with flavors of blackberry, plum and cherry that linger well beyond the velvety finish. Enjoyable now, this wine also has the structure to make it a candidate for graceful aging through 2010.
