The Vintage
The 2002 growing season was somewhat typical in Napa Valley with excellent weather from Spring to Fall. However, there was a smaller than normal Cabernet Sauvignon crop due to some Spring rain during bloom. A heat spike in September stressed the vines and concentrated the flavors in the berries. At harvest the grapes displayed a wonderful balance between fruit and structure that matured into a wine with elegant flavors.
Winemaking
The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were again harvested from the Leonardini Vineyard in St. Helena and Morisoli Vineyard in Rutherford. These grapes were picked by hand on September 30th, October 1st and October 7th 2002. The Malbec grapes were harvested from a small vineyard block in Yountville on October 5th, 2002. The wine was aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 22 months.
