The Vintage

The 2001 growing season began with an ideal bloom and fruit set in mid-May despite a surprise frost. May and June were especially warm and aided in the early development of the grape clusters. The remainder of the summer and harvest season, through the end of October, was ideal with near perfect daytime temperatures and cool nights. This growing year resulted in beautifully balanced fruit with intense flavors and rich, mature tannins.

Winemaking

The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were again harvested from the Leonardini Vineyard in St. Helena and Morisoli Vineyard in Rutherford. These grapes were picked by hand on September 21st, 24th and October 1st, 2001. The Petite Verdot grapes were harvested from a small vineyard block in Calistoga on September 29, 2001. The wine was aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 22 months.

Tasting Notes

This is classic Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine has a deep, intense color and a distinct fruit center that begins with black cherry, violet and currant aromas. It is well balanced, elegant and sleek on the palate, delivering very long berry and cherry flavors through to the finish. The good underlying tannin structure, complexity and ample fruit guarantees rewards to the patient collector.
