2012 - 10 Flashy California Merlots - Tim Fish
“A go-to source for Napa Merlot is Whitehall Lane, where winemaker Dean Sylvester finds a great balance for a fair price. [It is] soft and supple, with floral and toasty black cherry aromas and easygoing red currant and spicy vanilla flavors.” – Tim Fish (9/14) 10 Flashy California Merlots
2011 - 4 Stars, Restaurant Wine
“Excellent Napa Valley Merlot value. The 2011 is full bodied, medium rich, and lightly tannic; a Merlot with plum, cassis, toast, and spicy oak aromas/flavors, and a very long finish.

The mouthfeel on this wine is rustic, with a jagged edge that hints of green tannins. But it does have some good red cherry, currant, spice and oak flavors, and a certain elegance. — S.H. (12/1/2013)
2010 - 4 Stars, Restaurant Wine
“Excellent Napa Valley Merlot value. The 2010 is fleshy in texture and ripe in flavor; an exceptional Merlot. It is full bodied, intensely fruity, lightly tannic, and complex, tasting of blackberry, cassis, toast, black licorice, and spicy oak. Restaurant Wine, 2014
2009 - 91 Points, Wine Spectator
“Rich and plush, but nicely structured, with black cherry and toasty vanilla aromas and soft red currant, cedar and spice notes. A touch of herb comes in with the ripe tannins on the finish.” TF “11 California Reds under $40” September 2012
2009 - 85 Points, Wine Enthusiast
A touch of unripeness gives this wine some steamed broccoli and herb notes, although it also shows plenty of sweet blackberry, cherry and oak. Merlot’s smooth softness is present. — S.H. (12/31/2012)

texture. Feels so soft and drink-me-now in the mouth, with waves of blackberries, cherries, red currants, licorice and mocha.” – S.H. (11/1/2011)
2007 - 91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
The 2007 Merlot is a fine example. Silky and complex, it’s layered with black cherry and toasty mocha notes. You can sip it alone, but its deft balance of tannins and acidity makes it great for a steak. Whitehall Lane harvested from around the valley for the 2007, which was a great vintage for Napa reds. Winemaker Dean Sylvester blended in 10 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 9 percent Syrah to add backbone and complexity. I rated it 91 when I retasted it non-blind recently, and the $28 price is very reasonable for that level of quality.
